• Tree squirrels grow between 1-2 feet long including their tail. They are generally gray, brown, or black and have light-colored underbellies. Tree squirrels prefer to live among trees where ground cover is plentiful.
• Ground squirrels are generally smaller with short hair and shorter fur. Their colors range from reddish-gray to smoky brown and may have spots or stripes. Ground squirrels create burrows in the ground with multiple exits.
• Flying squirrels are the smallest of the three types. The webs of skin between their fore and hind limbs allow them to glide through the air. Typically flying squirrels are light brown or gray and their large eyes help them see at night. Their preferred habitat includes wooded areas where they can glide from treetop to treetop.
